About Me
Hello friends and welcome!
My name is Jason Johnson, I am a 36 year old photographer based out of Layton Utah. I am most passionate about wildlife photography, but also enjoy shooting landscapes, city scapes and astrophotography.
I grew up in Sandy Utah surrounded by the beautiful Wasatch mountain range. Ever since I can remember, Ive always had a love and curiosity of our natural world. As a kid growing up in Utah, I spent a lot of time outside exploring. From backpacking trips every summer to the high Uintas wilderness, to annual trips in the stunning red rock deserts of the American southwest, I have truly fostered a love and appreciation for what nature has to offer.
I bought my first “big boy” camera in my late twenties, and learned everything I could about the craft. After buying a used telephoto lens, and getting my first awful blurry photo of a hawk in flight, I knew I had found my calling!
When I was 32, I had a very unique opportunity to work onboard a National Geographic expedition ship. After completing a 6 month contract of working at sea, little did I know that I would be spending the next 3 years working on ships, and traveling to some of the most coveted locations in the western hemisphere. I worked 3 seasons in Baja California, Mexico, 2 seasons in Alaska, as well as several different itineraries in Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, and the Galapagos Islands.
It was my time working on these ships when I really noticed my passion starting to blossom and grow. In 3 years, I had more opportunities to observe and photograph some of the worlds most stunning species than most people get to experience in a lifetime. I also had the opportunity of working and living alongside some of the most talented photography instructors National Geographic has to offer, learning as much as I could, and developing lasting friendships with some truly amazing and gifted humans!
Today, I call Northern Utah my home, and I spend as much of my free time as I can exploring and photographing the wild places of my beautiful home state. I am pleased and excited to share with you my experiences through the unique perspective of my camera and lens! Thank you so much for visiting, and happy travels to you.
