-The Alaskan brown bear is a subspecies of grizzly bear. The primary difference between a brown bear and a grizzly lies in the geography and environment they live in. When you hear someone say “brown bear”, typically, they are referring to the coastal bears of British Columbia and Alaska who feed primarily on salmon and clams. The term “grizzly” refers to the bears who live in the interior of Alaska, as well as Montana & Wyoming. The most notable difference between the two is the size, as the coastal brown bear tends to be much larger than its grizzly cousin of the interior.

-Grizzly 399, arguably the most famous grizzly bear of all time. Photographed here in 2020, she miraculously gave birth to 4 cubs at the age of 24 years old. At the age of 28, she was tragically struck and killed by a vehicle south of Jackson, Wyoming. In her 28 years of life, she successfully reared 22 cubs and grand cubs. I will forever be grateful for the one close encounter I was blessed with to be able to get this shot.
